The Stone Spheres Park (Kamene kugle) is one of the most unusual and intriguing natural attractions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located near the town of Zavidovići, in central Bosnia, surrounded by forests, hills, and the valley of the river Krivaja. The site is best known for its collection of nearly perfectly round stone formations scattered across the forest floor. These mysterious objects, often called stone spheres or “stone balls”, vary in size from small stones that can fit in a hand to massive boulders weighing several tons. Some of them are remarkably smooth and spherical, which has made the site famous both locally and internationally.
There are actually multiple locations around Zavidovići where stone spheres can be found. The main “Stone Spheres Park” is usually associated with the village of Grab (Mećevići), just a few kilometers north of the town. This area is especially significant because Grab is considered to have the largest concentration of stone spheres in the whole of Europe, making it a unique geological hotspot on the continent. Another well-known location is in Podubravlje, where some of the largest spheres have been discovered, including one of the biggest stone spheres in Bosnia, estimated to weigh over 30 tons. Together, these sites form a kind of informal natural park that attracts visitors, hikers, researchers, and curious tourists.
The main reason the Stone Spheres Park attracts attention is the unusual shape of the stones. While rounded rocks are not rare in nature, the Zavidovići spheres are often described as unusually perfect in form. One explanation is that the stone spheres are concretions, formed naturally over millions of years when minerals in groundwater gradually cemented layers of sediment around a central core. As time passed, erosion exposed these formations and shaped them into their remarkably round appearance. However, there are also alternative theories proposed by some researchers and writers, suggesting that the spheres could be products of unknown ancient cultures, ritual or symbolic objects, or even artificially created structures.
Although locals were aware of the stone spheres for generations, they gained wider attention in the early 2000s, when researchers and tourist initiatives began promoting them as a natural phenomenon worth visiting. Since then, the area has slowly developed into a small eco-tourism attraction. Today, visitors can walk through forest paths and see clusters of spheres lying partially embedded in the ground. The site is accessible and does not require special equipment or long hiking routes, making it a popular short excursion. Visitors to the Stone Spheres Park often describe it as a peaceful and unusual place. The forest environment, combined with the strange geometric shapes of the stones, creates a unique atmosphere.
