In 2006, we contacted researcher Semir Osmanagić via email regarding the stone spheres located in the village of Grab, in the streambed near Zavidovići. After his visit, it was determined that this site contains the largest concentration of stone spheres in one place, not only in Zavidovići but also in Europe. Following the promotion of the site, the Citizens’ Association “Stone Spheres” was founded, which began activities to develop and arrange the location. The first works included cleaning the stream of waste, arranging walking paths, and creating conditions for visitors to access the site. The president of the Citizens’ Association “Stone Spheres” was Nedžad Ikanović, who continued the active promotion of the stone spheres in Zavidovići and also located and recorded other stone spheres found within the municipality of Zavidovići.
In the implementation of site development activities, significant support was provided by the Municipality of Zavidovići and the Tourist Board of the Zenica-Doboj Canton through donations and financial resources. Thanks to this support, concrete paths and access points to the stream where the stone spheres are located were built.
In the following years, a stone bridge over the stream was constructed, along with shelters for visitor rest, a children’s playground with swings and a slide, as well as other facilities. Within approximately two years, a parking area for visitors was also developed, located along the main road about 100 meters from the site.
As the number of tourists grew year by year, more intensive development and preparation of additional facilities continued. A large wooden shelter was built, with a capacity of eight tables and a total of 64 seats, as part of plans for a future restaurant. An information office was also built, in front of which stone souvenirs made from fragments of damaged and broken stone spheres were displayed.
Today, this site is one of the most well-known tourist attractions in the Zavidovići area and attracts visitors from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the region, and many European countries. Preparations for further development of the tourist offer are progressing rapidly. Plans include the construction of a restaurant as well as apartment accommodation, which will make the stone spheres site in Grab an even more attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists..
